The Future of Roofing – What Can You Expect?

4/18/2018

Modern technology is constantly advancing. There’s no exception for roofing. From new materials to innovative inspection methods, there are a range of ways the roofing industry is already changing and some ways that we can expect it to change in the coming decades. How exactly? Read on as we look at what to expect from roofing in the future.

Solar tiles

One development that’s already begun is solar tiles. No – not solar panels on your roof but tiles that can generate electricity themselves using light from the sun. That’s all the benefits without the eyesore of large panels. In 2009, US-based DOW began producing solar roofing tiles, available to homes across the US. The problem? They couldn’t convince enough people to buy them, and ditched the idea in 2016. Since then, RGS has agreed a deal with DOW to begin producing the ’Powerhouse’ tiles again. At the same time, Tesla have announced their own solar tiles and ’Solar Roof’ through their SolarCity subsidiary. With growing awareness of the benefits of renewable energy, it may only be a matter of time before this kind of roof tiling becomes commonplace.

Detecting problems in your roof

Smart homes are no longer an alien concept from science-fiction. From automated lightings to home assistants, we’re seeing more of our home controlled by technology – to the extent that fridges can tell us when we need to pick up some milk. There’s no reason this kind of technology can’t be used within roofing. Homes can already be fitted with technology to detect leaks like burst pipes and alert homeowners. This could be fitted within the roof itself, to detect more acute problems like water ingress or damp.

Changing the way we inspect roofs

Regular inspections are essential to a roof’s function and lifespan. They identify problems early, allowing them to be eliminated before they develop. Can technology help? Of course it can. Over the last decade, drones have been adapted for a wide range of purposes – from military and law enforcement to logistics and geographic mapping. They’ve also become a useful tool for filming, whether it’s for aerial shots in Hollywood blockbusters or a birds-eye view of Old Trafford on Super Sunday. And this enhancement of cameras on drones has fuelled the emerging concept of drones used for roof inspections. Along with high-definition cameras, first-person view allows users to view the drone as they control it. This makes it ideal for navigating and inspecting different areas of the roof. When combined with the expertise of a roofing specialist, it could provide a way to make roofing inspections quicker and easier in the future.
